BNP Paribas Open Summit 2025 Key Insights 1st Edition
New Market Dynamics and Macro Shifts
Welcome to the first edition of Key Insights from the 2025 BNP Paribas Open Summit. This installment includes our macro views on economics, policy and capital markets to help navigate the unpredictable and rapidly evolving environment; the M&A landscape; the state of AI, cloud platforms and data centers; and disruptive technology driving the future of mobility.
The intensity at the BNP Paribas Open tournament paired well with the mood at the Summit when our leaders and a gathering of corporate clients across multiple sectors, met to cover evolving macro matters, a shifting M&A landscape, and the rapidly evolving state of AI, cloud platforms, and data centers in 2025.
Predicting the Unpredictable
Tariffs and inflationary pressures are immediate concerns as economic and policy uncertainty continues to drive recession concerns. Tariffs’ application to a range of goods and products are expected to exacerbate inflationary pressures, setting up an uncertain macro backdrop that could make sizable, strategic decisions more challenging for corporate leaders.
Gauging Capital Markets Impacts
While market volatility may trigger fits and starts in debt and equity issuance—leading to a more selective approach among issuers—it remains unlikely that recent choppiness will prevent issuance altogether in the face of investor appetite. In the wake of market turbulence, some stock market investors have recalibrated to consumer staples, utilities, healthcare, and real estate investment trusts (REITs) to begin the year.
Despite uncertainty, some issuers rushed to tap the market for their funding plans early this year to take advantage of favorably tight spreads. There have also been repricings and opportunistic refinancings to start the year, as well as a diverse mix of IPO issuers and jumbo deals. Elsewhere, interest rates have raised the cost of capital making it more difficult for M&A buyers and sellers to set valuations.
Navigating New Regulations
Our clients and senior leaders discussed how M&A deals have faced increasing regulatory scrutiny by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on the basis of antitrust concerns – and outside the U.S., corporates may have to take on added considerations to complete the process. Expecting a number of policy and regulatory decisions, many corporates and private equity firms are on the sidelines waiting to chart out updated strategies.
AI in Action
Capital expenditures on AI are soaring and international players are moving quickly to establish a presence in what is believed to be the next cornerstone of technology innovation. Already, AI has leapt from the tech sector and is proliferating across industries, ranging from drug discoveries and genomic research to food manufacturing, product development and marketing applications. Even as AI begins to impact corporates’ strategizing and hiring, leaders are also weighing broader societal implications that accompany the new technology.
Disruptive Technologies Power the Future of Mobility
The mobility ecosystem is simultaneously experiencing consolidation and diversification, but automakers face disruption and challenges as the EV marketplace and infrastructure develops. The customer’s journey continues to evolve as well, with a growing range of transit options that have expanded the access model.
